The Story Behind The Painting

Winter Sleep

Winter Sleep feels like an echo of Quidi Vidi in Newfoundland and Labrador, with something of Trinity in its snow-covered fishing rooms and outport character. The harbour lies open between white hills, where colourful stages and quiet boats wait beneath a pale winter sky. Across the water, a distant lighthouse keeps watch, its reflection faintly joining the little village in the blue stillness of the inlet.

Elizabeth created this scene from the echoes of many coastal winters rather than from a photograph. Snow has simplified the land, softened the buildings and drawn every remaining colour into gentle focus. Winter Sleep is solitude without loneliness—a season of rest in which the harbour gathers its strength and waits patiently for the return of light.
