Twilight on the Coast feels like an echo of Rockport in Massachusetts, softened by winter and memory, with something of Stonington in Maine in its working wharves and boats. Snow-covered houses are scattered across the hillside while fishing stages stand dark against the cool blue inlet. Bright dories and rounded rocks punctuate the water, their reflections lingering as daylight slowly withdraws from the coast.

Elizabeth did not paint an exact village or a particular winter evening. She painted the feeling that remains after such a place has been left behind—the blue hush of snow, the sturdiness of waterfront buildings and the small signs of colour that keep a community alive.
