Maritime Morning feels like an echo of Corea in Maine, softened by time, with something of Blue Rocks in Nova Scotia in its granite shore and quiet fishing buildings. Two weathered stages stand on a narrow green point, their reflections extending into the pale water below. A few bright boats wait beside the wharf, while the generous sky and open harbour give the little settlement a feeling of complete and unhurried peace.

Elizabeth did not paint a particular harbour or follow the details of a photograph. She painted what memory chose to keep: the strong line of a wharf, sun-warmed rocks, simple houses and boats waiting for the day.
